Solution
1. Preparation
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a flat surface and the engine is cool.
  • Gather necessary tools and parts.
2. Coolant Level Check
  • Open the hood and locate the coolant reservoir.
  • If the level is low, top off with the recommended coolant mixture (BMW-approved coolant).
  • Safety Warning: Never open the radiator cap when the engine is hot to avoid burns.
3. Inspect and Replace Leaky Components
  • Use a flashlight to inspect all hoses and connections for signs of leaks.
  • If any hoses are found to be damaged or leaking:
    • Disconnect the hose clamps using a screwdriver or pliers.
    • Remove the damaged hose and replace it with a new OEM part.
    • Reattach the clamps and ensure a tight fit.
4. Thermostat Test and Replacement
  • Remove the thermostat housing by loosening the bolts with a socket set.
  • Remove the old thermostat and check its condition.
  • If faulty, replace it with a new thermostat that opens at the correct temperature (typically around 90°C/194°F).
  • Reassemble the housing and torque bolts to the manufacturer’s specifications.
5. Check and Replace Radiator Fan
  • Start the engine and allow it to reach operating temperature.
  • Observe the radiator fan; it should engage automatically.
  • If the fan does not operate:
    • Disconnect the fan connector.
    • Use a multimeter to test for power at the connector.
    • If no power is detected, check the fan relay and replace if necessary.
    • If the fan is defective, remove it and install a new fan.
6. System Flush and Refill
  • If the coolant is dirty or contaminated, perform a coolant flush:
    • Attach a flush kit to the radiator and run clean water through the system.
    • Once cleaned, drain the system and refill it with the appropriate coolant mixture.
  • Bleed the cooling system to remove air pockets by following the manufacturer's bleed procedure.
