Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather necessary tools and parts.
  • Disconnect the vehicle's battery to ensure safety while working on electrical components.
2. Access the Fuel Level Sending Unit
  1. Remove the rear seat cushion or access panel to locate the fuel pump access cover.
  2. Unscrew and remove the access cover to expose the fuel pump assembly.
  3. Carefully disconnect the fuel pump wiring harness and fuel lines (take care as there may be residual fuel).
  4. Remove the retaining ring holding the fuel pump assembly in place using a suitable tool.
3. Inspect and Replace the Fuel Level Sending Unit
  1. Carefully lift out the fuel pump assembly, taking note of how it is positioned.
  2. Remove the fuel level sending unit from the assembly by unclipping or unscrewing it.
  3. Inspect the sending unit for any signs of wear or damage.
  4. If faulty, replace the sending unit with a new one, ensuring it is compatible with the E90/E91 model.
  5. Reassemble the fuel pump and sending unit back into the tank, securing it with the retaining ring.
4. Reconnect and Test
  1. Reconnect the fuel lines and wiring harness to the fuel pump assembly.
  2. Reinstall the access cover and rear seat cushion.
  3. Reconnect the vehicle's battery.
  4. Start the vehicle and check if the fuel gauge is functioning correctly.
