Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather tools and parts needed for the repair.
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal to ensure safety.
  • Raise the vehicle securely using jack stands if any undercar access is required.
2. Remove TCM
  • Locate the TCM, usually found under the floor mat or behind the glove compartment.
  • Disconnect the wiring harness from the TCM by pressing the release tabs.
  • Unbolt the TCM using the appropriate socket size (typically a Torx or socket).
  • Carefully remove the TCM from its mounting position.
3. Inspect and Repair
  • Visually inspect the TCM for physical damage or burnt components.
  • If the TCM is damaged, replace it with a new or refurbished unit. If connections are corroded, clean them with electrical contact cleaner.
  • If there are any software issues, reprogram the TCM using a compatible BMW diagnostic tool (such as ISTA/D).
4. Reinstallation
  • Position the TCM back into its mounting location.
  • Secure it with the bolts to the specified torque (typically around 10-15 Nm).
  • Reconnect the wiring harness ensuring a firm click for proper seating.
  • Reconnect the negative battery terminal.
5. Fluid Change (if necessary)
  • If transmission fluid was dirty or low, drain the old fluid and replace with fresh manufacturer-recommended transmission fluid.
  • Ensure to replace the transmission filter if applicable during this step.
