Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Socket set, torque wrench, flat-head screwdriver, clean rags, drain pan, safety glasses, gloves.
  • Park the vehicle on a level surface and engage the parking brake.
  • Allow the engine to cool down completely before starting work.
2. Drain Transmission Fluid
  • Place a drain pan under the transmission pan.
  • Remove the transmission pan bolts using the socket set.
  • Carefully tilt the pan to allow the transmission fluid to drain into the pan. Dispose of the old fluid properly.
3. Remove the Transmission Pan
  • Once drained, remove any remaining bolts securing the transmission pan.
  • Gently tap the pan with a rubber mallet if it is stuck, being careful not to damage it.
  • Lift the pan off and inspect the old gasket and pan for wear.
4. Clean the Surface
  • Use a clean rag and a suitable solvent to clean the mating surfaces of the transmission and the pan.
  • Ensure that all remnants of the old gasket are removed to provide a proper seal for the new gasket.
5. Install New Gasket and Pan
  • Place the new gasket onto the cleaned transmission pan. Ensure it is properly aligned.
  • Reposition the transmission pan back onto the transmission, carefully aligning it.
  • Hand-tighten the bolts to hold the pan in place, then use a torque wrench to tighten to the manufacturer’s specifications (usually around 8-10 Nm, but verify with service manual).
6. Refill Transmission Fluid
  • Use a funnel to refill the transmission with the appropriate type of fluid as specified by BMW.
  • Start the engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature.
  • Check the transmission fluid level and add fluid as necessary.
