Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather necessary tools and parts (listed below).
  • Ensure the engine is cool and parked on a flat surface.
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent any electrical issues.
2. Remove the Old Oil Filter
  • Tools Required: Oil filter wrench
  • Use the oil filter wrench to carefully unscrew the oil filter. Turn counterclockwise.
  • Have a drain pan or container ready to catch any residual oil that may spill out during removal.
  • Dispose of the old oil filter properly.
3. Inspect and Prepare the New Oil Filter
  • Tools Required: Clean rag
  • Check the new oil filter and ensure it is compatible with the BMW E90/E91.
  • Apply a thin layer of new engine oil to the rubber gasket on the new filter to ensure a proper seal.
  • Inspect the oil filter mounting surface on the engine for debris or old gasket material.
4. Install the New Oil Filter
  • Screw the new oil filter onto the engine by hand until the gasket makes contact with the mounting surface.
  • Tighten the filter an additional 3/4 turn using the oil filter wrench, but do not over-tighten as this may damage the gasket.
5. Refill Engine Oil
  • Tools Required: Oil funnel, new engine oil
  • Remove the oil fill cap on the engine.
  • Using an oil funnel, pour the appropriate amount of new engine oil into the engine (refer to owner's manual for capacity).
  • Replace the oil fill cap securely.
6. Check for Leaks
  • Reconnect the negative battery terminal.
  • Start the engine and let it idle for a few minutes.
  • Inspect the oil filter area for any signs of oil leakage. If no leaks are found, check the oil level with the dipstick and add more oil if necessary.
