Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather necessary tools: Multimeter, Battery terminal cleaner, Wrench set, Safety gloves and goggles.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface and that the ignition is turned off.
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal to ensure safety.
2. Inspect and Clean Battery Terminals
  • Sub-steps:
    • Remove the positive terminal first, followed by the negative terminal.
    • Inspect for corrosion (white, ashy substance) on terminals and cables.
    • Clean the terminals using a battery terminal cleaner or a mixture of baking soda and water.
    • Reconnect the negative terminal first, then the positive terminal.
3. Test Battery Voltage
  • Sub-steps:
    • Reconnect the battery terminals securely.
    • Set the multimeter to the DC voltage setting.
    • Place the red probe on the positive terminal and the black probe on the negative terminal.
    • Record the voltage reading; if it is below 12.4 volts, consider charging or replacing the battery.
4. Jump Start the Vehicle
  • Sub-steps:
    • Connect the jumper cables to the dead battery as follows: positive to positive, negative to a grounded metal surface on the dead vehicle.
    • Start the donor vehicle and then attempt to start your BMW.
    • If the vehicle starts, allow it to run for at least 15-30 minutes to recharge the battery.
5. Replace Battery (if necessary)
  • Sub-steps:
    • If the battery is unable to hold a charge, remove the old battery by loosening the hold-down clamp and disconnecting the terminals.
    • Install the new battery, connecting the positive terminal first, followed by the negative terminal.
    • Tighten the hold-down clamp securely.
