Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Jack and jack stands, lug wrench, ratchet and socket set, torque wrench, wheel chocks.
  • Safety Warning: Always ensure the vehicle is securely supported on jack stands before working on it.
2. Remove Wheel
  • Loosen the lug nuts using a lug wrench while the vehicle is on the ground.
  • Jack up the vehicle and secure it with jack stands.
  • Remove the lug nuts completely and take off the wheel.
3. Inspect and Test Wheel Bearing
  • Wheel Play Test: Grip the wheel at 12 and 6 o’clock and try to rock it. There should be minimal to no movement. If there is play, the bearing may need replacement.
  • Spin Test: With the wheel off, rotate the hub. It should spin freely without noise. Any grinding or roughness indicates a failing bearing.
4. Replace Wheel Bearing (if needed)
  • Remove Brake Caliper: Unbolt the brake caliper from the bracket, and hang it using a wire or bungee to avoid stress on the brake line.
  • Remove Brake Rotor: If necessary, slide off the brake rotor. Clean any rust or debris from the hub.
  • Remove Hub Assembly: Unbolt the hub assembly from the knuckle. This may require a socket set and possibly a hammer to break it free.
  • Install New Bearing: Press the new bearing into the hub or replace the entire hub assembly, depending on the design.
  • Reassemble: Reinstall the hub assembly, brake rotor, and caliper. Ensure all bolts are torqued to the manufacturer's specifications.
