Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather tools and park the vehicle on a level surface.
  • Tools Required: Jack, jack stands, socket set, pry bar, torque wrench.
2. Lift the Vehicle
  • Use a jack to lift the front of the vehicle and place jack stands under the appropriate jacking points.
  • Remove the front wheels by loosening the lug nuts and using a socket to take them off.
3. Inspect Ball Joints
  • Examine each ball joint visually for cracks or signs of wear.
  • Use your hands to check the rubber boots for tears or leaks.
4. Test for Play
  • With the tire off, grasp the wheel at the 12 and 6 o'clock positions and pull/push to feel for play.
  • If movement is detected, repeat the process at the 3 and 9 o'clock positions.
5. Leverage Test
  • Insert a pry bar between the lower control arm and the ball joint.
  • Carefully apply leverage to check for excessive movement. Any significant play indicates a worn ball joint.
6. Reassemble
  • If no issues are found, reinstall the wheels and lower the vehicle.
  • Torque the lug nuts to the manufacturer’s specifications (generally around 80-100 ft-lbs).
