Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather all necessary tools and parts.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface and the engine is off.
  • Safety: Allow the engine to cool before starting work.
2. Raise the Vehicle
  • Use a jack to lift the front of the vehicle and secure it with jack stands.
  • Make sure the vehicle is stable before working underneath.
3. Drain Old Transmission Fluid
  • Locate the transmission drain plug on the underside of the transmission.
  • Place a drain pan beneath the drain plug.
  • Remove the drain plug using a socket wrench and allow the old fluid to completely drain into the pan.
4. Replace Transmission Filter (if applicable)
  • Remove the transmission pan bolts using a socket wrench.
  • Carefully detach the transmission pan and remove the old filter.
  • Install the new filter, ensuring it is seated properly.
  • Clean the transmission pan and replace the gasket if necessary.
5. Refill New Transmission Fluid
  • Reinstall the transmission pan and secure it with the bolts, tightening to manufacturer specifications (usually around 8-10 Nm).
  • Locate the transmission fill plug on the side of the transmission.
  • Using a funnel, pour the new transmission fluid (check vehicle manual for the correct fluid type, typically BMW's ATF) into the fill hole until it starts to overflow slightly.
6. Check Fluid Level
  • Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes.
  • With the engine running, cycle through the gears (P, R, N, D) and back to Park to circulate the new fluid.
  • Check the fluid level again using the dipstick or fill plug and add more fluid if necessary until the correct level is achieved.
7. Final Checks
  • Replace the fill plug and tighten it securely.
  • Dispose of the old transmission fluid and filter properly.
  • Lower the vehicle back to the ground.
