Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather Tools: OBD-II scanner, socket set, coolant, wrench set, multimeter, thermometer.
  • Safety Precautions: Ensure the engine is cool before working on the cooling system and wear safety goggles and gloves.
2. Replace Coolant
  • Drain Coolant:
    • Locate the radiator drain plug and place a drain pan underneath.
    • Open the drain plug and allow the old coolant to completely drain.
  • Flush System:
    • Close the drain plug and fill the system with water. Run the engine with the heater on for about 10 minutes.
    • Drain the water to remove any residual contaminants.
3. Replace Thermostat
  • Remove Thermostat:
    • Locate the thermostat housing, remove the bolts using a socket set, and detach the housing.
    • Remove the old thermostat and gasket.
  • Install New Thermostat:
    • Place a new gasket on the housing and install the new thermostat.
    • Reattach the housing and torque the bolts to the manufacturer's specifications.
4. Inspect and Replace Water Pump (if needed)
  • Remove Water Pump:
    • Drain coolant again if necessary. Remove any belts connected to the water pump.
    • Unbolt the water pump from the engine block and carefully remove it.
  • Install New Water Pump:
    • Clean the mounting surface, place a new gasket, and position the new water pump.
    • Secure it in place with bolts and reconnect any belts.
5. Refill and Bleed Cooling System
  • Refill Coolant:
    • Fill the radiator with the recommended coolant mixture.
  • Bleed Air:
    • Start the engine with the radiator cap off and let it reach operating temperature.
    • Add coolant as necessary to remove any air pockets until the thermostat opens.
