Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather tools and parts needed for the repair.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a flat surface and the engine is turned off.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical issues.
2. Remove Steering Rack
  • Tools Required: Socket set, torque wrench, fluid catch pan.
  • Raise the vehicle using a jack and secure it on jack stands.
  • Remove the front wheels for easier access to the steering components.
  • Disconnect the tie rods from the steering rack by removing the cotter pins and nuts.
  • Detach the power steering lines from the steering rack, allowing fluid to drain into the catch pan.
  • Unbolt the steering rack from its mounting points on the subframe.
  • Carefully remove the steering rack from the vehicle.
3. Inspect and Replace
  • Check the old steering rack for signs of wear and damage.
  • If the steering rack is faulty, replace it with a new or remanufactured unit.
  • Install the new steering rack by reversing the removal steps—secure it to the subframe and reconnect the power steering lines and tie rods.
  • Torque all bolts to the manufacturer specifications.
4. Refill Power Steering Fluid
  • Fill the power steering reservoir with the appropriate fluid recommended for the Volvo XC90.
  • Start the engine and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock several times to purge air from the system.
5. Final Assembly
  • Reinstall the front wheels and lower the vehicle.
  • Reconnect the negative battery cable.
