Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather tools and parts required.
  • Ensure the engine is cold and disconnect the battery.
  • Wear safety goggles and gloves.
2. Perform a Pressure Test
  • Tools Required: Cooling system pressure tester.
  • Attach the pressure tester to the coolant reservoir.
  • Pump the tester to the specified pressure (usually 15-20 psi).
  • Monitor for pressure drop to identify leaks.
3. Replace Blown Head Gasket (if necessary)
  • Tools Required: Socket set, torque wrench, gasket scraper, gasket sealant.
  • Drain the coolant and remove the intake manifold and exhaust manifold.
  • Remove the cylinder head bolts in the specified sequence and lift off the cylinder head.
  • Clean the mating surfaces thoroughly.
  • Apply the new head gasket and reassemble the cylinder head with new bolts, tightening to manufacturer specifications.
  • Reinstall the intake and exhaust manifolds.
4. Repair Heater Core (if leaking)
  • Tools Required: Screwdriver set, pliers, coolant hose removal tool.
  • Remove the dashboard (if necessary) to access the heater core.
  • Disconnect the hoses from the heater core.
  • Remove the heater core and replace it with a new unit.
  • Reassemble the dashboard and reconnect hoses.
5. Refill Coolant and Check System
  • Refill the coolant system with the appropriate coolant type.
  • Bleed the system to remove any air pockets.
  • Disconnect the battery for a moment and reconnect.
