Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required:
    • Jack and jack stands
    • Socket set
    • Wrench set
    • Torque wrench
    • Spring compressor (if replacing front shocks)
  • Safety Warnings:
    • Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and securely supported by jack stands before starting work.
2. Remove the Shock Absorber
  • Raise the vehicle using a jack and secure it with jack stands.
  • Remove the wheel corresponding to the shock absorber being replaced.
  • Locate the shock absorber mounting bolts (top and bottom).
  • Use a socket set to remove the lower mounting bolt first, then the upper mounting bolt. Keep these bolts for reinstallation.
  • Carefully pull out the shock absorber from its mount.
3. Inspect and Replace
  • Inspect the old shock absorber for damage and confirm it is leaking.
  • If the shock is damaged, replace it with a new shock absorber.
  • Position the new shock absorber and insert it into the mounting location.
  • Secure the upper mount first, followed by the lower mount. Torque to manufacturer specifications (typically around 50-60 ft-lbs for lower mounts and 25-35 ft-lbs for upper mounts).
4. Reassemble and Test
  • Reinstall the wheel and tighten the lug nuts to the specified torque (usually around 100-110 ft-lbs).
  • Lower the vehicle back to the ground.
  • Perform a bounce test to ensure proper installation and function of the new shock absorber.
