Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Jack and jack stands, lug wrench, socket set, C-clamp or brake caliper tool, torque wrench, brake cleaner, and safety goggles.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface.
  • Wear safety goggles to protect your eyes.
  • Open the hood and remove the brake fluid reservoir cap to prevent pressure build-up.
2. Lift the Vehicle
  • Use the lug wrench to loosen the lug nuts on the wheel where you will replace the brake pads.
  • Jack up the vehicle and secure it with jack stands.
  • Remove the wheel by taking off the loosened lug nuts.
3. Remove the Brake Caliper
  • Locate the caliper mounting bolts on the back of the caliper.
  • Use the socket set to remove these bolts and slide the caliper off the rotor.
  • Support the caliper using a bungee cord or similar to avoid putting strain on the brake line.
4. Replace the Brake Pads
  • Remove the old brake pads from the caliper bracket by sliding them out.
  • Clean the caliper bracket with brake cleaner to remove dust and debris.
  • Insert the new brake pads into the caliper bracket, ensuring they are seated correctly.
5. Compress the Brake Caliper Piston
  • Use a C-clamp or brake caliper tool to gently push the caliper piston back into the caliper housing. This allows enough clearance for the new, thicker brake pads.
  • Check that the piston is fully retracted.
6. Reassemble the Brake Components
  • Position the caliper back over the new brake pads and rotor.
  • Reinstall the caliper mounting bolts and tighten them to the manufacturer’s specified torque (typically around 70 ft-lbs).
  • Reattach the wheel and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
7. Lower the Vehicle
  • Carefully lower the vehicle back to the ground.
  • Once down, use the torque wrench to fully tighten the lug nuts to the specified torque (typically around 100 ft-lbs).
8. Final Checks
  • Refill the brake fluid reservoir if necessary and replace the cap.
  • Pump the brake pedal several times to ensure proper pad seating and to build brake pressure before driving.
