Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Socket set, torque wrench, jack and jack stands, wheel chocks, brake cleaner, C-clamp or brake caliper tool, flat-head screwdriver.
  • Safety Warnings: Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and the parking brake is engaged. Always wear safety gloves and goggles.
2. Lift the Vehicle
  • Use the jack to lift the front or rear of the vehicle, depending on which brake pads are being replaced.
  • Place jack stands securely under the vehicle to ensure stability.
3. Remove the Wheel
  • Use the socket set to loosen and remove the lug nuts.
  • Take off the wheel to access the brake assembly.
4. Remove the Brake Caliper
  • Locate the caliper mounting bolts and use the socket set to remove them.
  • Carefully slide the caliper off the brake rotor. Do not disconnect the brake line; instead, use a bungee cord to hang the caliper from the suspension to avoid stress on the brake line.
5. Remove Old Brake Pads
  • Slide the old brake pads out of the caliper bracket. Note their orientation for correct installation of the new pads.
  • Inspect the caliper bracket for debris and clean it with brake cleaner.
6. Compress the Caliper Piston
  • Use a C-clamp or brake caliper tool to compress the caliper piston back into the caliper housing. This will allow enough space for the new, thicker brake pads.
  • Ensure the brake fluid reservoir cap is removed to allow fluid to flow back into the reservoir.
7. Install New Brake Pads
  • Insert the new brake pads into the caliper bracket in the same orientation as the old pads.
  • Ensure they are seated properly and secure.
8. Reattach the Brake Caliper
  • Slide the caliper back over the new brake pads and align it with the rotor.
  • Reinstall and torque the caliper mounting bolts to the manufacturer's specifications (usually around 25-35 Nm).
9. Reinstall the Wheel
  • Place the wheel back onto the hub and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
  • Lower the vehicle from the jack stands and use the torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts to the manufacturer’s specifications (typically 100-120 Nm).
10. Final Checks
  • Replace the brake fluid reservoir cap.
  • Pump the brake pedal several times to ensure proper brake pad seating and restore brake pressure.
