Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Socket set, torque wrench, jack and jack stands, power steering fluid, fluid catch pan, multimeter (if necessary).
  • Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface, and engage the parking brake.
  • Disconnect the battery to prevent any electrical issues while working.
2. Remove the Steering Rack
  • Sub-steps:
    1. Lift the front of the vehicle using a jack and secure it with jack stands.
    2. Remove the front wheels to gain access to the steering components.
    3. Disconnect the tie rod ends from the steering rack using a socket wrench.
    4. Disconnect the power steering lines from the steering rack; use a fluid catch pan to collect any leaking fluid.
    5. Remove any mounting bolts securing the steering rack to the subframe using a torque wrench.
    6. Carefully pull the steering rack out from the vehicle.
3. Install the New Steering Rack
  • Sub-steps:
    1. Position the new steering rack in place and secure it to the subframe with the mounting bolts.
    2. Torque the mounting bolts to the manufacturer’s specifications (consult service manual for specific values).
    3. Reconnect the power steering lines and ensure they are tightened properly to prevent leaks.
    4. Reattach the tie rod ends to the steering rack.
    5. Reinstall the front wheels and lower the vehicle back to the ground.
    6. Reconnect the battery.
4. Fill Power Steering Fluid
  • Sub-steps:
    1. Fill the power steering reservoir with the appropriate fluid type recommended for the Tiguan.
    2. Start the engine and turn the steering wheel from side to side to remove air from the system.
    3. Check the fluid level again and add more if necessary.
