Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather tools and parts needed.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface and the engine is cool.
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical shorts.

Tools Required:

  • Socket set (including 10mm, 13mm, and 17mm sockets)
  • Torque wrench
  • Timing belt kit (belt, tensioner, and idler pulley)
  • Crankshaft pulley tool
  • Pliers
  • Screwdrivers
  • Jack and jack stands
2. Remove Components
  • A. Remove the engine cover:

    1. Unscrew the bolts securing the engine cover and lift it off.
  • B. Remove the serpentine belt:

    1. Use a wrench to relieve tension on the serpentine belt tensioner and remove the belt from the pulleys.
  • C. Remove the timing belt cover:

    1. Disconnect any electrical connectors and hoses obstructing the timing cover.
    2. Unscrew the bolts holding the timing cover and carefully remove it.
3. Set Engine to Top Dead Center (TDC)
  1. Rotate the crankshaft using a socket until the timing mark on the crankshaft pulley aligns with the TDC mark on the timing cover.
  2. Ensure the camshaft alignment marks are also aligned properly.
4. Remove the Old Timing Belt
  1. Loosen the tensioner bolt and remove the tensioner.
  2. Remove the idler pulley if necessary.
  3. Carefully slide the old timing belt off the camshaft and crankshaft sprockets.
5. Install the New Timing Belt
  1. Place the new timing belt onto the crankshaft sprocket first, then up around the camshaft sprocket.
  2. Ensure that the belt is properly aligned with all timing marks.
  3. Install the new idler pulley and tensioner, ensuring everything is tight.
6. Reassemble Components
  • A. Reinstall the timing belt cover:

    1. Position the timing cover back and secure it with bolts.
  • B. Reinstall the serpentine belt:

    1. Route the serpentine belt around the pulleys and use the tensioner to apply tension.
  • C. Reinstall the engine cover:

    1. Place the engine cover back on and secure it with bolts.
7. Final Checks
  1. Reconnect the negative battery terminal.
  2. Start the engine and listen for any unusual noises.
  3. Check for leaks around the timing cover.
