Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required:
    • Jack and jack stands
    • Lug wrench
    • Socket set
    • C-clamp or brake caliper tool
    • Brake cleaner
    • Torque wrench
    • Safety glasses and gloves
  • Safely elevate the vehicle using a jack and secure it with jack stands.
  • Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and in gear (or in park for automatic transmissions).
2. Remove Wheel
  • Use the lug wrench to loosen the wheel lug nuts while the vehicle is still on the ground.
  • Once loosened, lift the vehicle with the jack and secure it on jack stands.
  • Remove the lug nuts completely and take off the wheel to access the brake assembly.
3. Remove Brake Caliper
  • Locate the caliper mounting bolts on the backside of the brake caliper.
  • Use the socket set to remove the caliper bolts.
  • Gently slide the caliper off the brake rotor and support it with a bungee cord or wire (do not let it hang by the brake line).
4. Replace Brake Pads
  • Remove the old brake pads from the caliper bracket. Note their orientation for installation of new pads.
  • Use the C-clamp or brake caliper tool to compress the caliper piston back into the caliper housing to create space for the new pads.
  • Install the new brake pads into the caliper bracket in the same orientation as the old pads.
5. Reinstall Brake Caliper
  • Align the caliper over the new pads and rotor.
  • Reinstall the caliper mounting bolts and tighten to the manufacturer’s specified torque (typically around 78 ft-lbs).
  • Ensure the caliper moves freely over the new pads.
6. Reinstall Wheel
  • Place the wheel back onto the hub and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
  • Lower the vehicle from the jack stands and then torque the lug nuts to the manufacturer’s specification (usually around 83 ft-lbs).
7. Final Checks
  • Pump the brake pedal a few times to ensure the brake pads are seated properly and the brake fluid is at the correct level.
  • Check for any leaks around the caliper and ensure everything is secure.
