Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather necessary tools and parts.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface.
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal to ensure safety.
2. Check and Top Off Power Steering Fluid
  • Locate the power steering fluid reservoir.
  • Remove the cap and check the fluid level; it should be between the "MIN" and "MAX" lines.
  • If low, add the appropriate type of power steering fluid recommended for your RAV4 (typically ATF or specific power steering fluid).
  • Reattach the cap securely.
3. Inspect and Replace Power Steering Pump (if necessary)
  • Remove the serpentine belt by loosening the tensioner and sliding the belt off the power steering pump pulley.
  • Disconnect the power steering lines from the pump using the appropriate wrench.
  • Unbolt the pump from its mounting bracket and remove it from the vehicle.
  • Install the new power steering pump by reversing the removal steps and ensuring it is properly mounted.
  • Reconnect the power steering lines and the serpentine belt, ensuring proper alignment.
4. Bleed the Power Steering System
  • With the engine running, turn the steering wheel fully left and right several times to purge air from the system.
  • Check the fluid level again and add more fluid if necessary.
  • Inspect for any leaks at the pump and hoses.
5. Reconnect Battery and Test
  • Reconnect the negative battery terminal.
  • Start the engine and test the steering wheel's operation at both parked and driving speeds.
