Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Jack and jack stands, lug wrench, socket set, brake cleaner, torque wrench, safety glasses, gloves.
  • Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and the parking brake is engaged.
2. Raise the Vehicle
  • Use a jack to lift the front or rear (depending on which brakes are grinding).
  • Secure the vehicle with jack stands for safety.
3. Remove Wheel
  • Use a lug wrench to loosen and remove the lug nuts.
  • Take off the wheel and set it aside.
4. Inspect and Replace Brake Pads

a. Inspect Brake Pads

  • Check the thickness of the brake pads. If they are less than 3mm, they should be replaced.
  • Look for uneven wear or damage.

b. Remove Old Brake Pads

  • Remove the caliper bolts using a socket wrench.
  • Carefully slide the caliper off the rotor. Support it with a bungee cord or hang it to avoid stressing the brake line.
  • Take out the old brake pads from the caliper bracket.

c. Install New Brake Pads

  • Apply brake lubricant to the backing of the new brake pads.
  • Insert the new brake pads into the caliper bracket.
5. Inspect and Replace Brake Rotors (if necessary)

a. Check the Condition

  • Inspect the rotors for grooves, cracks, or warping.

b. Remove Old Rotors

  • Remove the caliper bracket if it obstructs rotor removal.
  • Unscrew and take off the rotor.

c. Install New Rotors

  • Clean the new rotor with brake cleaner to remove any protective oil.
  • Install the new rotor onto the hub.
6. Reassemble Components
  • Reattach the caliper over the new pads and secure with caliper bolts. Torque to manufacturer specifications (usually around 25-35 ft-lbs).
  • Reinstall the wheel and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
7. Lower Vehicle and Final Checks
  • Lower the vehicle back to the ground and torque the lug nuts to the recommended specifications (typically 76-80 ft-lbs for RAV4).
  • Pump the brake pedal to ensure proper pad seating.
