Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Jack and jack stands, socket set, OBD-II scanner, torque wrench, exhaust pipe cutter (if necessary).
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface and the engine is cool.
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical shorts.
2. Remove the Faulty Catalytic Converter
  1. Raise the vehicle using a jack and secure it with jack stands.
  2. Locate the catalytic converter along the exhaust system.
  3. If applicable, use an exhaust pipe cutter to remove any section of the exhaust pipe that may be welded to the converter.
  4. Unbolt the catalytic converter from the exhaust manifold and the downstream exhaust pipe using the appropriate socket size.
  5. Carefully remove the catalytic converter from its mounting brackets.
3. Install the New Catalytic Converter
  1. Position the new catalytic converter in place, ensuring it aligns with the exhaust manifold and downstream pipe.
  2. Hand-tighten bolts to secure the converter to the exhaust manifold and downstream pipe.
  3. Torque the bolts to the manufacturer's specifications (usually around 30-40 ft-lbs, but check service manual).
  4. If applicable, weld the exhaust pipe back into position securely.
4. Reconnect Battery and Test
  1. Reconnect the negative battery terminal.
  2. Start the engine and let it idle to check for leaks around the new catalytic converter.
  3. Monitor engine performance and ensure the check engine light does not reappear.
