Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather tools and materials:
    • Brake fluid (specific to vehicle requirements)
    • Clean rags
    • Wrenches and sockets (for bolts)
    • Brake bleeder kit
  • Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and secured with wheel chocks.
2. Remove Old Master Cylinder
  • Disconnect the battery to prevent electrical short circuits.
  • Remove the brake fluid reservoir cap and siphon out fluid to prevent spills.
  • Disconnect the brake lines from the master cylinder using the appropriate wrench. Be prepared for some fluid loss.
  • Unbolt the master cylinder from its mounting bracket (usually two bolts) and carefully remove it from the vehicle.
3. Install New Master Cylinder
  • Position the new master cylinder in place and secure it with bolts to the mounting bracket. Torque bolts to the manufacturer’s specifications (typically around 15-20 ft-lbs, but verify for your specific model).
  • Reconnect the brake lines to the new master cylinder, ensuring they are properly seated and tightened.
  • Fill the brake fluid reservoir with the appropriate type of brake fluid, ensuring it reaches the correct level.
4. Bleed the Brake System
  • Use a brake bleeder kit to remove air from the brake lines:
    • Start with the wheel furthest from the master cylinder (usually the right rear).
    • Have an assistant press the brake pedal and hold it down while you open the bleeder valve to release fluid and air; close the valve and repeat until fluid runs clear without bubbles.
    • Move to the next wheel in order (left rear, right front, left front).
  • Check brake fluid level again and top off if necessary.
