Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather necessary tools and parts.
  • Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and engage the parking brake.
  • Use wheel chocks for added safety.
2. Remove Wheel
  • Use a lug wrench to loosen the lug nuts slightly.
  • Lift the vehicle using a jack and secure it with jack stands.
  • Remove the lug nuts and take off the rear wheel.
3. Inspect and Remove Brake Components
  • Inspect Brake Pads: Check the wear indicator on the pads; if worn down, replace them.
  • Remove Caliper:
    • Use a socket set to remove caliper bolts.
    • Carefully slide the caliper off the rotor and support it with a bungee cord (do not let it hang by the brake line).
  • Remove Brake Pads: Slide the worn pads out of the caliper bracket.
4. Clean and Replace Components
  • Clean the Brake Assembly: Use brake cleaner to remove dust and debris from the rotor and caliper.
  • Install New Brake Pads: Apply brake grease to the back of the new pads and slide them into the caliper bracket.
  • Reinstall Caliper: Position the caliper over the new pads and secure it by tightening the caliper bolts to the manufacturer’s specified torque (usually around 20-25 ft-lbs).
5. Reassemble and Test
  • Put the wheel back on and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
  • Lower the vehicle and remove the jack stands.
  • Tighten the lug nuts to the manufacturer’s specified torque (typically 76 ft-lbs for RAV4).
  • Pump the brake pedal several times to ensure proper pad seating.
