Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather tools: battery terminal cleaner, multimeter, jumper cables, and a wrench set.
  • Ensure safety gear is worn: gloves and safety glasses.
  • Park the vehicle in a safe, well-ventilated area.
2. Inspect and Clean Battery Terminals
  • Sub-step 1: Disconnect the negative (-) terminal first, followed by the positive (+) terminal.
  • Sub-step 2: Clean any corrosion on the terminals and battery posts using a battery terminal cleaner or a mixture of baking soda and water.
  • Sub-step 3: Dry the terminals thoroughly and reconnect the positive (+) terminal first, followed by the negative (-) terminal.
3. Jump-Start the Vehicle
  • Sub-step 1: Position a functioning vehicle close enough for jumper cables to reach both batteries.
  • Sub-step 2: Connect the positive (+) cable to the dead battery first, then to the good battery.
  • Sub-step 3: Connect the negative (-) cable to the good battery and then to an unpainted metal surface on the dead vehicle (not directly to the negative terminal).
  • Sub-step 4: Start the functioning vehicle for a few minutes, then attempt to start the RAV4.
4. Replace the Battery (if necessary)
  • Sub-step 1: If the vehicle does not start, remove the old battery by disconnecting the terminals in reverse order (negative first).
  • Sub-step 2: Remove the battery hold-down bracket and lift the battery out of the tray.
  • Sub-step 3: Place the new battery in the tray, secure it with the hold-down bracket, and reconnect the terminals (positive first, then negative).
