Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather tools and park the vehicle on a flat surface.
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal to ensure safety.
2. Inspect and Replace Power Steering Fluid
  • Remove the power steering reservoir cap.
  • Check the fluid level; if low, top off with the manufacturer-recommended power steering fluid.
  • If the fluid is dirty or contaminated, drain and replace it:
    • Place a drain pan under the power steering pump.
    • Disconnect the return line and allow old fluid to drain.
    • Reconnect the return line and fill the reservoir with new fluid.
3. Examine and Replace Steering Components
  • Tie Rod Ends:

    • Raise the front of the vehicle with jack stands.
    • Inspect tie rod ends for wear; if worn, remove the cotter pin and nut, then replace the tie rod end.
  • Ball Joints:

    • Inspect ball joints for play or damage; if defective, remove the wheel and disconnect the ball joint from the control arm.
4. Check the Serpentine Belt
  • Inspect the serpentine belt for cracks or wear.
  • If damaged, replace it by loosening the tensioner and sliding the belt off the pulleys.
  • Install a new belt following the routing diagram located on the engine.
5. Test the Power Steering Pump
  • Reconnect the battery terminal.
  • Start the engine and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock.
  • Listen for any unusual noises from the power steering pump indicating it may need replacement.
  • If noise persists, remove the pump and replace it with a new one, ensuring all connections are secure.
