Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Wheel chocks, jack and jack stands, lug wrench, brake cleaner, torque wrench, socket set, and safety glasses.
  • Safety Warnings: Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface, use wheel chocks, and engage the parking brake before lifting.
2. Remove Wheel
  1. Loosen the lug nuts slightly while the wheel is still on the ground.
  2. Use the jack to lift the vehicle and place it securely on jack stands.
  3. Remove the lug nuts completely and take off the wheel.
3. Inspect and Remove Brake Components
  1. Remove the caliper by loosening the caliper bolts with a socket set.
  2. Carefully slide the caliper off the rotor; support it with a bungee cord or hang it to avoid straining the brake line.
  3. Remove the brake pads from the caliper bracket.
  4. If necessary, remove the caliper bracket for rotor access by unbolting it.
4. Replace or Clean Brake Pads and Rotors
  1. If brake pads are worn (less than 3mm thickness), replace them with new pads.
  2. Clean the brake rotors with brake cleaner; if they are scored or worn beyond specifications, replace them.
  3. If replacing rotors, ensure they are properly torqued to manufacturer specifications when installing.
5. Reassemble Components
  1. Reinstall the caliper bracket if removed and torque the bolts to the specified value (usually around 30-40 lb-ft for most applications).
  2. Install the new or cleaned brake pads into the caliper bracket.
  3. Reattach the caliper over the brake pads and torque the caliper bolts to specifications (typically 20-25 lb-ft).
  4. Put the wheel back on and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
6. Lower the Vehicle and Finalize
  1. Lower the vehicle carefully off the jack stands.
  2. Tighten the lug nuts fully in a crisscross pattern to ensure even tightening.
  3. Pump the brake pedal a few times to ensure the pads seat properly before driving.
