Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather necessary tools and parts. Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface with the engine off.
  • Tools Required: Brake fluid tester, wrench set, syringe or brake bleeder kit, clean rags.
  • Safety Warnings: Always wear gloves and safety goggles to protect from brake fluid, which is corrosive.
2. Check Brake Fluid Condition
  • Open the brake fluid reservoir cap and inspect the fluid.
    • If the fluid is dark, dirty, or has debris, it indicates contamination.
    • If moisture content is above 3% using a brake fluid tester, a flush is necessary.
3. Perform Brake Fluid Flush
  • Use a syringe to extract old brake fluid from the reservoir.
  • Refill the reservoir with new brake fluid that meets Toyota specifications (DOT 3 or DOT 4).
  • Starting from the furthest brake caliper, bleed the brakes to remove old fluid:
    1. Attach a clear hose to the bleeder screw on the caliper.
    2. Have an assistant press the brake pedal slowly and hold it down.
    3. Open the bleeder screw to allow fluid and air to escape. Close the screw before the assistant releases the pedal.
    4. Repeat until new, clear fluid comes out.
    5. Repeat for each brake caliper in order (right rear, left rear, right front, left front).
  • Check and top off the brake fluid reservoir as needed.
