Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Jack, jack stands, lug wrench, socket set, torque wrench, C-clamp or brake caliper tool, brake cleaner, and a bungee cord or rope.
  • Safety Warnings: Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface. Always use jack stands when the vehicle is elevated to prevent accidents.
2. Elevate the Vehicle
  • Use the lug wrench to loosen the lug nuts on the wheel where the brake pads will be replaced.
  • Jack up the vehicle and securely place it on jack stands.
  • Remove the lug nuts and the wheel.
3. Remove Brake Caliper
  • Locate the caliper mounting bolts (usually two) and remove them using the socket set.
  • Carefully slide the caliper off the rotor. Use a bungee cord to hang the caliper from the suspension to avoid straining the brake line.
4. Remove and Replace Brake Pads
  • Slide the old brake pads out of the caliper bracket. Note their orientation for reinstallation.
  • Compare new brake pads with old ones to ensure correct size.
  • Apply brake cleaner to the caliper bracket and wipe it clean.
  • Insert new brake pads into the caliper bracket in the same orientation as the old pads.
5. Compress Brake Caliper Piston
  • Use a C-clamp or brake caliper tool to compress the caliper piston back into the caliper housing. Ensure the brake fluid reservoir cap is loosened to allow fluid to return without pressure buildup.
  • Once the piston is fully retracted, remove the tool.
6. Reinstall Brake Caliper
  • Place the caliper back over the new brake pads and rotor.
  • Reinsert and tighten the caliper mounting bolts to the manufacturer’s torque specifications (typically 80-90 ft-lbs).
7. Reassemble
  • Reinstall the wheel and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
  • Lower the vehicle off the jack stands and then torque the lug nuts to the specified value (typically 75-80 ft-lbs).
