Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather tools and materials:
    • Drain pan
    • Pliers
    • Funnel
    • New coolant (Toyota Genuine or equivalent)
    • Distilled water
    • Hose (optional for flushing)
  • Ensure the engine is cool before starting.
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal for safety.
2. Drain Old Coolant
  • Place the drain pan under the radiator drain plug.
  • Open the drain plug located at the bottom of the radiator and allow the coolant to completely drain into the pan.
  • Close the drain plug once the coolant has drained.
3. Flush the System
  • If using a garden hose:
    • Connect the hose to the top radiator hose or use a flushing kit.
    • Run water through the system until the water runs clear from the radiator drain.
  • If not using a hose:
    • Fill the radiator with distilled water and replace the cap.
    • Start the engine and let it run until it reaches operating temperature with the heater on max.
    • Turn off the engine and let it cool, then drain again to remove any contaminants.
4. Refill with New Coolant
  • Mix the new coolant with distilled water as per the manufacturer's recommendation (usually 50/50).
  • Using a funnel, refill the radiator with the new coolant mixture.
  • Fill the overflow reservoir to the appropriate level.
5. Bleed Air from the System
  • Start the engine with the radiator cap off and allow it to reach operating temperature.
  • Add coolant as necessary to keep the level full while the thermostat opens and air bubbles escape.
  • Once air bubbles stop rising, replace the radiator cap securely.
