Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather necessary tools and parts.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface and the engine is cool.
2. Oxygen Sensor Replacement (if faulty)
  • Tools Required: O2 sensor socket, ratchet, torque wrench
  • Sub-steps:
    1. Disconnect the vehicle battery to prevent electrical shorts.
    2. Locate the faulty upstream or downstream oxygen sensor based on diagnostic results.
    3. Unplug the electrical connector from the sensor.
    4. Use the O2 sensor socket to remove the sensor from the exhaust pipe.
    5. Apply anti-seize compound to the threads of the new sensor.
    6. Install the new oxygen sensor, tightening it to manufacturer specifications (typically 30-40 lb-ft).
    7. Reconnect the electrical connector.
3. Catalytic Converter Replacement (if necessary)
  • Tools Required: Wrench set, socket set, torque wrench, exhaust gasket
  • Sub-steps:
    1. Disconnect the battery again for safety.
    2. Raise the vehicle using jack stands and remove the underbody shields as needed.
    3. Disconnect the exhaust pipes from both ends of the catalytic converter.
    4. Remove any mounting bolts or brackets securing the catalytic converter.
    5. Carefully extract the old catalytic converter from the vehicle.
    6. Install the new catalytic converter, using a new exhaust gasket, and secure it with bolts to the manufacturer’s torque specifications.
    7. Reconnect the exhaust pipes and any removed components.
4. Resetting the Engine Control Module (ECM)
  • Tools Required: OBD-II scanner
  • Sub-steps:
    1. Reconnect the vehicle battery.
    2. Use an OBD-II scanner to clear the P0420 error code from the ECU.
    3. Start the vehicle and allow it to reach operating temperature.
