Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather tools and parts needed for the repair.
  • Disconnect the battery to ensure safety while working on electrical components.
  • Raise the vehicle using a jack and secure it with jack stands.
2. Inspect and Replace Oxygen Sensors
  • Tools Required: O2 sensor socket, ratchet, and torque wrench.
  • Remove the upstream oxygen sensor (usually located before the catalytic converter).
    • Use the O2 sensor socket to unscrew the sensor from the exhaust manifold.
    • Disconnect the electrical connector.
  • Install the new upstream oxygen sensor.
    • Apply anti-seize compound to the threads of the new sensor.
    • Hand-tighten the sensor, then use a torque wrench to tighten it to the manufacturer's specified value (usually around 30 lb-ft).
  • Repeat the process for the downstream oxygen sensor (located after the catalytic converter).
3. Inspect and Replace Catalytic Converter (if necessary)
  • Tools Required: Socket set, impact wrench, and torque wrench.
  • Remove the exhaust pipe connected to the catalytic converter.
    • Loosen the bolts using a socket set.
    • Carefully detach the exhaust pipe from the catalytic converter.
  • Remove the catalytic converter from its mounting.
    • Unscrew the bolts securing it to the exhaust manifold and the exhaust piping.
  • Install the new catalytic converter.
    • Ensure proper alignment and secure it with new bolts, tightening them to the manufacturer's specifications (usually 40 lb-ft).
  • Reattach the exhaust pipe and secure with bolts.
4. Reset the Check Engine Light
  • Tools Required: OBD-II scanner.
  • Reconnect the battery.
  • Use the OBD-II scanner to clear the P0420 code from the vehicle's computer.
