Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Jack and jack stands, lug wrench, pry bar, torque wrench, safety glasses, gloves.
  • Safety Warnings: Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and securely supported on jack stands before working underneath.
2. Raise the Vehicle
  • Use a jack to lift the front of the vehicle and securely place jack stands under the frame.
  • Remove the front wheels using a lug wrench.
3. Inspect Ball Joints
  • Visual Check: Examine the ball joints for any visible damage or excessive dirt and grease.
  • Check for Play: Grasp the wheel at the 12 and 6 o'clock positions and wiggle. If there is excessive movement, the ball joint is likely worn.
4. Test for Movement
  • Insert a pry bar under the lower control arm and gently lift. If the ball joint has excessive movement, it indicates wear.
  • If necessary, repeat the test on the upper ball joint.
5. Reassemble and Lower Vehicle
  • Reinstall the wheels and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
  • Lower the vehicle back to the ground and torque the lug nuts to manufacturer specifications (typically 80-100 ft-lbs).
