Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: OBD-II scanner, multimeter, socket set, torque wrench, oxygen sensor socket.
  • Perform the following:
    • Disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.
    • Allow the engine to cool.
2. Inspect Wiring and Connectors
  • Remove any covers or shields to access the wiring harness.
  • Visually inspect the wiring and connectors for signs of wear, fraying, or corrosion.
  • Repair or replace any damaged components as necessary.
3. Test Oxygen Sensor
  • Locate Bank 1 Sensor 1 (typically before the catalytic converter).
  • Using the multimeter, check the heater circuit by probing the connector terminals.
    • Resistance should typically be around 10-20 ohms. Replace the sensor if out of range.
  • Start the engine and measure the voltage output from the sensor.
    • A normal voltage range is between 0.1V and 0.9V (switching). If it remains low, proceed to replace the sensor.
4. Replace Oxygen Sensor
  • Use an oxygen sensor socket to unscrew the old sensor from the exhaust manifold.
  • Apply anti-seize compound to the threads of the new sensor to prevent seizing.
  • Install the new sensor, torque to manufacturer specifications (usually around 30 ft-lbs).
  • Reconnect the electrical connector securely.
5. Final Checks
  • Reconnect the battery.
  • Start the engine and allow it to reach operating temperature.
  • Check for exhaust leaks around the sensor and ensure everything is secure.
