Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather necessary tools and parts.
  • Park the vehicle on a level surface and engage the parking brake.
  • Disconnect the battery to ensure safety while working.
2. Check and Refill Power Steering Fluid
  • Locate the power steering fluid reservoir.
  • Remove the cap and check the fluid level; if low, add the appropriate type of power steering fluid as specified in the owner's manual.
  • Inspect the fluid for contamination; if dirty, proceed to replace the fluid.
3. Inspect and Replace Power Steering Pump (if necessary)
  • Remove the serpentine belt by loosening the tensioner with a socket set.
  • Disconnect the power steering pump hoses; use a container to catch any leaking fluid.
  • Unbolt the power steering pump from its mounting bracket.
  • Install the new pump by reversing the removal steps, ensuring all connections are secure.
4. Check/Replace Steering Rack (if necessary)
  • Lift the front of the vehicle using jack stands for safety.
  • Disconnect the steering column from the steering rack, following the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Remove the bolts securing the steering rack and carefully pull it out.
  • Install the new steering rack, making sure to align it correctly and tighten bolts to specified torque values.
5. Reassemble and Test
  • Reconnect the serpentine belt, ensuring proper tension is maintained.
  • Refill the power steering fluid as necessary.
  • Reconnect the battery and start the vehicle, allowing the power steering system to bleed any air.
  • Test drive the vehicle to ensure steering feels normal.
