Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather tools and parts:
    • Tools required: Socket set, torque wrench, screwdriver set, timing belt tool kit, and a ratchet.
    • Parts required: New timing belt, timing belt tensioner, timing belt idler pulley, and new water pump (recommended).
2. Disconnect Battery
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal to avoid any electrical shorts during the repair.
3. Remove Components
  • a. Remove the Engine Cover: Unscrew any bolts securing the engine cover and lift it off.
  • b. Remove Accessory Belts: Loosen the tensioners and remove the serpentine belts from the alternator, power steering pump, and other pulleys.
  • c. Drain Engine Coolant: Place a drain pan under the radiator, and remove the drain plug to drain coolant from the system.
4. Remove Timing Belt Cover
  • a. Remove Timing Belt Covers: Unbolt and remove the upper and lower timing belt covers to expose the timing belt.
  • b. Align the Crankshaft and Camshaft: Rotate the crankshaft using a socket until the timing marks are aligned (usually at the 0 degree mark).
5. Remove Old Timing Belt
  • a. Loosen Tensioner: Use the appropriate tool to relieve tension on the timing belt tensioner, and remove the tensioner.
  • b. Remove the Timing Belt: Carefully remove the old timing belt from the camshaft and crankshaft pulleys, ensuring no damage to the pulleys.
6. Install New Timing Belt
  • a. Install New Tensioner and Idler Pulley: Replace the timing belt tensioner and idler pulley as per manufacturer's specifications.
  • b. Install New Timing Belt: Place the new timing belt around the crankshaft and camshaft pulleys, ensuring proper alignment with the timing marks.
7. Reassemble Components
  • a. Tighten Tensioner: Apply tension to the new belt according to manufacturer specifications.
  • b. Replace Timing Belt Covers: Reinstall the timing belt covers and tighten all bolts securely.
  • c. Reattach Accessory Belts: Reinstall and tension the serpentine belts.
  • d. Refill Coolant: Replace the radiator drain plug and refill the cooling system with new coolant.
8. Reconnect Battery
  • Reconnect the negative battery terminal.
