Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Jack, jack stands, lug wrench, socket set, brake caliper tool, brake cleaner, torque wrench.
  • Safety Warnings: Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and the parking brake is engaged.
2. Lift the Vehicle
  • Loosen the lug nuts slightly while the vehicle is on the ground.
  • Use the jack to lift the vehicle and secure it with jack stands.
  • Remove the lug nuts and take off the wheel.
3. Remove Brake Components
  • a. Remove Caliper:

    • Locate the caliper mounting bolts using the socket set.
    • Remove the bolts and carefully slide the caliper off the rotor. Support it with a bungee cord or wire to avoid straining the brake line.
  • b. Remove Brake Pads:

    • Slide the old brake pads out of the caliper bracket. Note their orientation for installation of the new pads.
  • c. Remove Rotor (if necessary):

    • If the rotor needs replacement, remove the retaining screws (if applicable) and slide the rotor off the hub. If stuck, tap gently with a rubber mallet.
4. Install New Components
  • a. Install New Rotor:

    • Clean the new rotor with brake cleaner to remove any protective coating.
    • Slide the new rotor onto the hub and secure it with retaining screws.
  • b. Install New Brake Pads:

    • Apply brake grease to the backing of the new pads (avoid contact with the friction material).
    • Slide the new brake pads into the caliper bracket in the same orientation as the old pads.
  • c. Reinstall Caliper:

    • Compress the caliper piston using a brake caliper tool to make room for the new pads.
    • Place the caliper back over the pads and rotor, then secure it by tightening the caliper mounting bolts to the specified torque (typically 20-25 ft-lbs).
5. Reassemble and Lower Vehicle
  • Reinstall the wheel and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
  • Lower the vehicle back to the ground using the jack.
  • Tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to the manufacturer’s specifications (typically 80-100 ft-lbs).
6. Final Checks
  • Pump the brake pedal several times to ensure the caliper piston is seated properly.
  • Check the brake fluid level and top off if necessary.
