Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Socket set, torque wrench, brake cleaner, vacuum gauge, OBD-II scanner, flathead screwdriver, Phillips screwdriver.
  • Park the vehicle on a level surface and engage the parking brake.
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical shorts.
  • Remove the engine cover if equipped.
2. Disconnect Components
  • Locate the brake booster, which is mounted to the firewall.
  • Disconnect the brake lines from the master cylinder using an appropriate flare wrench. Cap the lines to prevent fluid loss.
  • Remove the electrical connector for the brake booster if applicable (some models may have a brake booster sensor).
  • Unscrew the nuts securing the master cylinder to the brake booster and carefully remove the master cylinder.
3. Remove Brake Booster
  • Locate the mounting nuts for the brake booster on the firewall.
  • Use a socket to remove the mounting nuts (typically 4-5 nuts).
  • Pull the brake booster away from the firewall, ensuring the pushrod does not get damaged.
  • Remove the pushrod from the brake pedal by unfastening the retaining clip or nut.
4. Install New Brake Booster
  • Position the new brake booster into place, aligning it with the mounting holes on the firewall.
  • Reattach the pushrod to the brake pedal and secure it with the retaining clip or nut.
  • Thread and tighten the mounting nuts to the specified torque (usually around 15-20 ft-lbs, but verify with service manual).
  • Reinstall the master cylinder onto the new brake booster, tightening the nuts to the appropriate torque specifications.
5. Reconnect Components
  • Reconnect the brake lines to the master cylinder, ensuring proper sealing.
  • Reconnect the electrical connector for the brake booster if applicable.
  • Reconnect the negative battery terminal.
6. Bleed Brake System
  • Using a brake bleeder, bleed the brake system starting from the furthest wheel from the master cylinder (usually right rear), then left rear, right front, and finally left front.
  • Ensure there are no air bubbles in the brake lines and the brake fluid level is topped off.
