Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather all required tools and parts. Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface and the engine is cool.
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical shorts during repairs.
2. Inspect and Replace Oxygen Sensors
  • Tools Required: O2 sensor socket or wrench, torque wrench, penetrating oil (if needed).
  • Inspect the connectors and wiring for both upstream and downstream oxygen sensors.
  • If faulty, remove the old oxygen sensors:
    • Apply penetrating oil to the sensor threads if they are rusted.
    • Use the O2 sensor socket to unscrew the sensors.
  • Install the new oxygen sensors:
    • Ensure the threads are clean; apply anti-seize compound on the threads.
    • Torque the sensors to manufacturer specifications (usually around 30 lb-ft).
3. Replace the Catalytic Converter (if necessary)
  • Tools Required: Socket set, torque wrench, exhaust pipe cutter or saw, gasket scraper, new gaskets and hardware.
  • Remove any heat shields or mounting brackets obstructing access to the catalytic converter.
  • Cut or unbolt the old catalytic converter from the exhaust pipes.
  • Clean the mating surfaces on the exhaust pipes to ensure a proper seal.
  • Install the new catalytic converter:
    • Position the converter and secure it with new gaskets and bolts, torquing to manufacturer specifications.
  • Reinstall heat shields and brackets if removed.
4. Reset the Engine Control Module (ECM)
  • Reconnect the negative battery terminal.
  • Use the OBD-II scanner to clear the P0420 code from the ECM.
  • Start the engine and allow it to reach operating temperature.
