Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Socket set, torque wrench, steering wheel puller, fluid catch pan, jack stands, floor jack.
  • Safety Warnings: Disconnect the battery before starting work. Allow the engine to cool before proceeding.
2. Lift the Vehicle
  • Use a floor jack to raise the front of the vehicle.
  • Secure it with jack stands to ensure safety while working underneath.
3. Remove the Front Wheels
  • Loosen the lug nuts with a socket wrench.
  • Remove the lug nuts and take off the front wheels for easier access.
4. Disconnect Steering Components
  • Remove the tie rod ends by loosening the nut and using a steering wheel puller if necessary.
  • Disconnect the intermediate steering shaft from the steering rack.
5. Drain Power Steering Fluid
  • Place a fluid catch pan under the steering rack.
  • Remove the power steering lines from the rack and allow fluid to drain completely.
6. Remove the Steering Rack
  • Unbolt the steering rack from its mounting points (typically 4 bolts).
  • Carefully slide the steering rack out from the vehicle.
7. Install New Steering Rack
  • Position the new steering rack into place.
  • Secure it with the mounting bolts, tightening them to the manufacturer’s specifications (consult service manual for torque values).
8. Reconnect Power Steering Lines
  • Reattach the power steering lines to the new rack, ensuring they are secure and free from leaks.
9. Reconnect Steering Components
  • Reattach the intermediate steering shaft and tie rod ends. Ensure tie rod ends are tightened to spec.
10. Reinstall Front Wheels
  • Place the front wheels back on and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
  • Lower the vehicle from jack stands and then torque the lug nuts to the manufacturer’s specifications.
11. Fill Power Steering Fluid
  • Refill the power steering reservoir with the correct type of fluid (consult service manual for specifications).
12. Bleed the Steering System
  • Start the engine and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock to remove air from the system. Check fluid levels and top off as necessary.
