Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather tools and parts needed for the repair.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface and the engine is cool.
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal for safety.
2. Check and Refill Power Steering Fluid
  • Tools Required: Funnel, Power steering fluid (as specified in owner's manual).
  • Inspect the fluid level in the reservoir and add fluid as necessary.
  • If the fluid appears dirty or contaminated, proceed to flush the system.
3. Flush Power Steering System (if necessary)
  • Tools Required: Fluid line disconnect tool, catch basin, new power steering fluid.
  • Disconnect the return line from the power steering pump and place it in a catch basin.
  • Start the engine briefly to pump out old fluid, then turn off the engine.
  • Reconnect the line and fill the reservoir with new power steering fluid.
4. Inspect and Replace Power Steering Pump (if noise persists)
  • Tools Required: Socket set, torque wrench, screwdrivers, pulley puller, new power steering pump.
  • Remove the serpentine belt from the power steering pump.
  • Disconnect the power steering lines and remove the mounting bolts for the pump.
  • Replace with a new pump and torque mounting bolts to manufacturer's specifications.
  • Reconnect all lines and install the serpentine belt.
5. Bleed the Power Steering System
  • Tools Required: Helper (optional).
  • With the engine running, turn the steering wheel from lock to lock several times to remove air from the system.
  • Check the fluid level again and top off as necessary.
