Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required:
    • Jack and jack stands
    • Socket set
    • Wrench set
    • Torque wrench
    • U-joint removal tool or a hammer and punch
  • Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface, then lift and securely support it on jack stands.
  • Disconnect the battery to ensure safety during repairs.
2. Remove Driveshaft
  • Sub-steps:
    1. Locate the bolts securing the driveshaft to the rear differential and the transmission.
    2. Use a socket wrench to loosen and remove these bolts, keeping them in a safe place for reinstallation.
    3. Carefully slide the driveshaft out of the transmission and then from the rear differential.
3. Remove the Broken U-Joint
  • Sub-steps:
    1. Place the driveshaft in a bench vise to stabilize it.
    2. Use a U-joint removal tool to press out the broken U-joint by applying even pressure on the yoke.
    3. If a removal tool is not available, use a hammer and punch to tap out the U-joint caps gently. Ensure to support the yoke properly to avoid damage.
4. Install New U-Joint
  • Sub-steps:
    1. Apply a small amount of grease to the new U-joint caps.
    2. Position the new U-joint into the yoke and press it in using the U-joint tool or hammer, ensuring it is seated evenly.
    3. Install the retaining clips to secure the U-joint in place.
5. Reinstall Driveshaft
  • Sub-steps:
    1. Align the driveshaft with the transmission and rear differential.
    2. Insert the driveshaft and secure it with the bolts previously removed.
    3. Use a torque wrench to tighten the bolts to the manufacturer's specified torque settings.
