Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather necessary tools and parts.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface and that the engine is off.
  • Wear safety gloves and goggles for protection.
2. Inspect and Replace Hoses
  • Tools Required: Socket set, wrench set, fluid catch pan
  • Remove the clamps securing the power steering hoses to the reservoir and pump.
    • Use a socket or wrench to loosen the clamps.
  • Carefully detach the hoses and inspect for damage.
    • If any hoses are damaged, replace them with new parts.
  • Reattach the new hoses securely and tighten the clamps to the manufacturer’s specifications (typically 15-25 in-lbs).
3. Inspect and Replace Steering Rack
  • Tools Required: Hydraulic jack, jack stands, socket set
  • Lift the front of the vehicle using a hydraulic jack and secure it with jack stands.
  • Remove the underbody shield (if applicable) to access the steering rack.
  • Disconnect the steering linkage from the steering rack.
  • Remove the bolts securing the steering rack to the chassis.
  • Carefully pull the steering rack out and inspect for leaks.
  • If leaking, replace the steering rack with a new unit, following the reverse of removal steps.
  • Reattach the steering linkage and bolts, torqueing to specifications (usually around 30-40 ft-lbs).
4. Refill Power Steering Fluid
  • Tools Required: Power steering fluid (specific to BMW), funnel
  • Locate the power steering fluid reservoir and remove the cap.
  • Using a funnel, fill the reservoir with the appropriate power steering fluid until it reaches the recommended level.
  • Replace the cap securely.
5. Bleed the Power Steering System
  • Start the engine and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock several times to purge air from the system.
  • Check fluid levels again and add more fluid if necessary.
  • Inspect for any leaks around the repaired areas.
