Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Socket set, wrench set, fluid catch pan, power steering fluid.
  • Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and engage the parking brake.
  • Disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.
2. Identify the Leak Source
  • Inspect the power steering fluid reservoir, lines, pump, and steering rack for visible leaks.
  • Clean the affected areas with a degreaser to better observe leaks.
3. Replace Faulty Components

A. If the reservoir is leaking:

  • Remove the reservoir by disconnecting the hoses and unscrewing any mounting bolts.
  • Install a new reservoir and reconnect the hoses securely.

B. If hoses are leaking:

  • Remove the affected hose by loosening the clamps and detaching it from the fittings.
  • Install a new hose, ensuring it is properly routed and secured with clamps.

C. If the pump is leaking:

  • Remove the serpentine belt by releasing the tensioner.
  • Disconnect the power steering lines from the pump and remove the mounting bolts.
  • Install a new power steering pump and reconnect the lines and belt.

D. If the steering rack is leaking:

  • Drain the power steering fluid from the system.
  • Remove the steering rack by disconnecting the tie rods and mounting bolts.
  • Install a new steering rack and reconnect all components.
4. Refill and Bleed the System
  • Fill the power steering reservoir with the appropriate type of power steering fluid specified for the BMW X5.
  • Start the engine and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock several times to bleed air from the system.
  • Check the fluid level and top off if necessary.
