Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Socket set, torque wrench, ratchet, extension, multimeter, OBD-II scanner, dielectric grease.
  • Disconnect the vehicle battery's negative terminal to ensure safety while working on electrical components.
2. Remove Engine Cover
  • Sub-steps:
    • Locate the screws or clips holding the engine cover in place.
    • Remove the screws/clips using the appropriate socket or tool.
    • Carefully lift the engine cover off and set it aside.
3. Access the Ignition Coil
  • Sub-steps:
    • Identify the ignition coil(s) on the engine. The X5 typically has one coil per cylinder.
    • Disconnect the electrical connector from the ignition coil by pressing the release tab and pulling it off.
4. Remove the Bad Ignition Coil
  • Sub-steps:
    • Use a socket wrench to remove the bolt securing the ignition coil to the engine.
    • Pull the ignition coil straight out of the spark plug hole. If it is stuck, gently twist it while pulling upwards.
5. Install New Ignition Coil
  • Sub-steps:
    • Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the inside of the new ignition coil's boot to facilitate installation.
    • Insert the new ignition coil into the spark plug hole and press down until seated.
    • Reinstall the securing bolt and torque it to the manufacturer’s specifications (typically around 10-15 Nm but check the service manual for exact values).
6. Reconnect Electrical Connector
  • Sub-steps:
    • Reconnect the electrical connector to the ignition coil until it clicks into place.
    • Ensure that the connection is secure and there are no loose wires.
7. Reinstall Engine Cover
  • Sub-steps:
    • Place the engine cover back onto the engine.
    • Secure it with the screws or clips previously removed.
8. Reconnect Battery
  • Reconnect the vehicle battery's negative terminal.
