Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather necessary tools and parts.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface and the engine is off.
  • Disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.
2. Check and Replace Transmission Fluid
  1. Remove the transmission fluid dipstick and check fluid level.
  2. If low, add the recommended transmission fluid type (usually ATF specific to BMW).
  3. If fluid is burnt or contaminated, proceed to drain and replace.
    • Tools required: Socket set, oil catch pan, funnel.
  4. Remove the transmission fluid pan bolts and carefully lower the pan.
  5. Drain the old fluid completely and inspect the pan for metal shavings.
  6. Replace the transmission filter if applicable.
  7. Reattach the fluid pan with a new gasket and torque bolts to manufacturer specifications.
3. Inspect and Replace Transmission Control Module (if necessary)
  1. Remove any panels blocking access to the TCM.
  2. Disconnect the wiring harness from the TCM.
  3. Remove the TCM from its mounting location.
  4. Install the new TCM and reconnect the wiring harness.
  5. Reinstall any removed panels.
4. Test Drive
  1. Reconnect the battery and start the engine.
  2. Take the vehicle for a test drive to check for improved shifting performance.
