Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather tools including a socket set, fluid pump, and OBD-II scanner.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface, and the engine is off for initial inspections.
2. Check and Refill Power Steering Fluid
  • Locate the power steering fluid reservoir.
  • Remove the cap and check the fluid level. If low, use a funnel to add the manufacturer-recommended power steering fluid (e.g., BMW CHF 11S).
  • Replace the cap securely.
3. Repair Leaks
  • If leaks are found:
    • Power Steering Pump Replacement
      • Disconnect the battery.
      • Remove the drive belt using a socket wrench.
      • Disconnect the power steering lines from the pump.
      • Unbolt the power steering pump from its mounting bracket.
      • Install the new pump by reversing the removal steps and torque bolts to manufacturer specs.
    • Hose Replacement
      • Remove the damaged hose by loosening the clamps and disconnecting it from both ends.
      • Install the new hose and ensure it's securely connected.
4. Test Power Steering System
  • Reconnect the battery.
  • Start the engine and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock to bleed the system of air.
  • Check for leaks around the pump and hoses.
5. Verify Fluid Level
  • After testing, turn off the engine and allow it to sit for a few minutes.
  • Recheck the power steering fluid level and add more if necessary.
