Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Socket set, jack and jack stands, drain pan, torque wrench, cleaning materials.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface and the parking brake is engaged.
  • Allow the differential to cool if the vehicle has been recently driven.
2. Drain Differential Fluid
  1. Place a drain pan under the differential.
  2. Remove the drain plug using a socket wrench.
  3. Allow the fluid to fully drain out into the pan.
  4. Inspect the fluid for metal shavings or excessive contamination.
3. Inspect and Clean Components
  1. Remove the fill plug and inspect the fluid condition.
  2. If the fluid is contaminated, clean the inside of the differential housing with a lint-free cloth.
  3. Inspect the gear teeth for signs of wear or pitting.
4. Replace Differential Fluid
  1. Use a high-quality differential fluid recommended by BMW (refer to the owner’s manual for specifications).
  2. Fill the differential with new fluid until it reaches the fill hole.
  3. Reinstall the fill plug and torque it to the manufacturer's specification.
5. Test Drive
  1. Lower the vehicle from the jack stands and start the engine.
  2. Take the vehicle for a test drive to listen for any remaining noise.
  3. Pay attention to handling and vibrations during the drive.
