Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather tools and parts needed for repairs.
  • Ensure the engine is cool before beginning work.
  • Disconnect the battery to avoid accidental electrical issues.
2. Refill Coolant
  • Tools Required: Coolant funnel
  • Remove the coolant reservoir cap.
  • If low, add the appropriate coolant mixture (BMW-approved coolant) until the proper level is reached.
  • Replace the reservoir cap securely.
3. Replace Thermostat (if faulty)
  • Tools Required: Socket set, torque wrench, gasket scraper
  • Remove the engine cover (if applicable).
  • Drain coolant from the engine by loosening the drain plug or removing the lower radiator hose.
  • Remove the thermostat housing bolts and lift off the housing.
  • Take out the old thermostat, clean the mating surfaces, and install the new thermostat with a new gasket.
  • Reassemble the thermostat housing, torque the bolts to manufacturer's specifications.
4. Repair or Replace Water Pump (if necessary)
  • Tools Required: Socket set, screwdrivers, gasket scraper
  • Drain coolant as previously described.
  • Remove the drive belt by loosening the tensioner.
  • Unbolt and remove the water pump from its housing.
  • Clean the mating surface and install the new water pump with a new gasket.
  • Reinstall the drive belt and ensure proper alignment.
5. Check and Repair Cooling System Leaks
  • Tools Required: Coolant pressure tester
  • Attach the coolant pressure tester to the reservoir and pressurize the system to identify leaks.
  • Repair or replace any leaking hoses, gaskets, or components identified during the test.
