Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather necessary tools and parts.
  • Disconnect the battery to prevent any electrical issues during repair.
  • Allow the vehicle to cool completely before working on the exhaust system.
2. Inspect and Replace Oxygen Sensors
  • Tools Required: O2 sensor socket, ratchet, and extension.
  • Remove the upstream and downstream oxygen sensors from the exhaust system using the O2 sensor socket.
  • Inspect the sensors for damage; if they are faulty, replace them with new sensors. Torque the new sensors to the manufacturer's specifications (usually around 30 Nm).
  • Reconnect the electrical connectors to the sensors.
3. Check and Replace Catalytic Converter (if necessary)
  • Tools Required: Socket set, jack stands, and exhaust hanger removal tool.
  • Support the vehicle securely on jack stands.
  • Remove any heat shields or components obstructing access to the catalytic converter.
  • Disconnect the exhaust pipes from the catalytic converter, taking care to avoid damaging the gaskets.
  • Remove the catalytic converter from its mounting brackets and install the new catalytic converter in the reverse order.
  • Reconnect any heat shields and components that were removed.
4. Reset the Engine Control Module (ECM)
  • Tools Required: OBD-II scanner.
  • After replacing the necessary components, use the OBD-II scanner to clear the P0420 code from the ECM.
  • Reconnect the battery and ensure all connections are secure.
