Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Spark plug socket, ratchet wrench, OBD-II scanner, feeler gauge, torque wrench, dielectric grease.
  • Ensure the engine is cool before starting the inspection to prevent burns.
  • Disconnect the battery to avoid electrical shock when handling ignition components.
2. Remove Engine Cover
  • Remove any screws or clips securing the engine cover.
  • Lift the engine cover off and set it aside in a safe location.
3. Disconnect Ignition Coils
  • Identify the ignition coil for each spark plug.
  • Carefully disconnect the ignition coil connectors by pressing down on the tab and pulling them off.
  • Remove the bolts securing each ignition coil and pull the coils out gently.
4. Remove and Inspect Spark Plugs
  • Using the spark plug socket, carefully unscrew each spark plug from the cylinder head.
  • Inspect each spark plug for:
    • Carbon buildup
    • Oil or fuel fouling
    • Erosion or damage to the electrode
  • Measure the spark plug gap using a feeler gauge; adjust if necessary to match specifications (typically between 0.7mm to 0.8mm for BMW).
5. Reinstall Spark Plugs and Coils
  • Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the ignition coil boots to aid in future removal.
  • Reinstall each spark plug, tightening to the manufacturer’s torque specifications (usually around 25 Nm).
  • Reinstall the ignition coils and secure them with bolts.
  • Reconnect the ignition coil connectors.
6. Replace Engine Cover
  • Position the engine cover back on and secure it with screws or clips as necessary.
